I’m an engineering student and for an individual hobby-like project i purchased a small solar panel and a small solar motor. I am planning on making a small solar powered toy car. The question i have is: is there a way to connect a control or some other ways of regulating the power that is absorbed by the cells? Other wise the motor will just continue to run. Any answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I assume it is a DC motor. You should have DC voltage coming out of the solar cell (For example 10V). You could use a transistor to switch the voltage on and off, then filter the output with an RC filter. You will have to choose the right RC time constant . It will have to be slower than the control pulse frequency, but faster than the desired motor response time.

If you switched the voltage with a 50% duty cycle, then filtered the output, you would get 5V, with a 75% duty cycle, you would get 7.5V, etc. Therefore, you could control the motor by controlling the duty cycle of the switching. A microcontroller like the BASIC Stamp can produce the control pulses.

The previous owner replaced the solar water heater with a standard 1 when it went bad,so i have panels with no use right now.

Used water heating panels have little value, as they are apt to leak. The previous owner probably put in a standard heater because there were problems with the solar system.

I’ve seen used solar water heating panels on Craigslist for $40-200, but don’t know if there are buyers. At the low end, it’s for the scrap value of the copper, I’m sure. And those prices are for panels sitting in someone’s yard. I’ve also panels offered free, still on the roof – you get, you haul, must take all.

If any body knows about a solar panel which can perform both the operation in a single panel i.e heating up the water as well as charging the batteries for electricity in a single panel. Please describe me about that and let me know where to look for it.

The proper operating temperature for solar cells is too low to produce hot water that is worth the cost of plumbing. Water cooled solar cells exist, especially when a lens to concentrate the sun is added, but the output water is below 110F to preserve the efficiency and pumping the relatively small volume of not very hot water as input to a hot water heater or house heat doesn’t gain much against the cost and maintenance of pump and piping and heat exchanger if in a freezing climate.
