Solar Home Heating

Heat your house with solar thermal (hot water) collectors. You can buy them, I made my own. There are 3 in this arrangement. 1 square foot of collector heats 1 1/2 U.S. gallons of water 40 degrees farenheit in Pennsylvania, USA in winter. The more collectors you put up the more water volume you can heat. Most people use one of these collectors for domestic hot water, showers, etc. I used mine to heat my house. Of course insulate well first, then see if you can use this. You’ll need to add radiant floor heat system to get heat out of tank.
It all cost about $2,000 in materials, 3 x 4′ x 10′ collectors, tank, fittings, pipe, differential thermostat, pump, insulation, collector box, etc. This system would be great for heating greenhouses thru the winter, almost free, once the up-front costs are met. tonyfixit.

Cheap Solar Heat

Last winter my boys and I made a very cheap solar heater with a large south facing window in our second story computer/ homeschool room. We just hung a black plastic sheet on the inside of the window with curtain rods. This left about 1.5″ for natural convection to take place. It draws the cooler air near the floor and the heat just flows out the top. This room would always get warm with the sun shining in, but with just this black sheet I was able to turn off my heater (forced air) and just leave the fan on to circulate this heat throughout the house. I also used a portable fan to move heat out of that room so we could stand working in there on our computers. On sunny days with below freezing temperatures outside , I could shut off our heater from 11:00 am to about 6:00 pm and stay perfectly warm and comfortable inside the house.

Our Final Results For A 2 hour test:

4″ inline inlet fan
Outside air temp 45F
Clear skies with full sun
Output temperature at 4′ from the top averaged 85 – 93F
Internal temp above the heat exchanger chamber averaged 125 – 132F.

Conclusion: The Boutique Heat Exchanger Design does very nicely maintain acceptable output temperatures when with an airflow of 60-80 CFM.

Note After Tests: The outlet pipe of approximately 4-5′ was not insulated. If insulated, the outlet temp most likely would have been 110-115F, not 80-95F.

Final Test day for Dave’s Do It Yourself Boutique solar heat Exchanger with an Inline 4″ inlet fan. Current temperatures low 40s and clear sky. Testing started around noon MST. Yesterday without a inlet fan, this unit reached 172F at the outlet. Today’s test is to measure the outlet temperatures with the inline fan.

Final Results: 2 hour test, 4″ inline inlet fan, outside air temp 45F, clear skies with full sun, output temperature at 4′ from the top averaged 85 – 93F, internal temp above the heat exchanger chamber averaged 125 – 132F.

Note After Tests: The outlet pipe of approximately 4-5′ was not insulated. If insulated, the outlet temp most likely would have been 110-115F, not 80-95F.
