<p>Engineers at Stanford have developed a process which can harness the light and heat of the sun simultaneously, which could lead to solar cells  that are twice as efficient as those currently available. Called photon enhanced thermionic emission &#8212; or PETE for short &#8212; the process differs from traditional cells which lose efficiency as temperatures rise, and the materials needed to build the cells are cheap and widely available. The engineers got around the lower efficiencies by coating a piece of semiconducting material with a thin layer of the metal cesium, which enables the material to use both heat and light simultaneously. While the materials as currently demonstrated work best in very high temperatures, the researchers indicate that in the near future, the materials could have wide enough application to make them competitive with traditional forms of energy.</p>

<p>In this video I&#8217;m showing the progress that I made with my <a href="http://www.ussolarwindpower.com" target=_self>solar heat</a>er. Now I need to collect more bottles, so I went to the local supermarket and they will help me to collect the bottles that I need.  Cutting and taping the bottles will take some time, but after that I can focus on the next task, and that will be insulating the copper pipe with all the fittings. I will show you how I&#8217;m going to do that. There are 3 in this arrangement. 1 square foot of collector heats 1 1/2 U.S. gallons of water 40 degrees farenheit in Pennsylvania, USA in winter. The more collectors you put up the more water volume you can heat. Most people use one of these collectors for domestic hot water, showers, etc. I used mine to heat my house. Of course insulate well first, then see if you can use this. You&#8217;ll need to add radiant floor heat system to get heat out of tank.<br />
It all cost about $2,000 in materials, 3 x 4&#8242; x 10&#8242; collectors, tank, fittings, pipe, differential thermostat, pump, insulation, collector box, etc. This system would be great for heating greenhouses thru the winter, almost free, once the up-front costs are met. tonyfixit.</p>

We just hung a black plastic sheet on the inside of the window with curtain rods. This left about 1.5&#8243; for natural convection to take place. It draws the cooler air near the floor and the heat just flows out the top. This room would always get warm with the sun shining in, but with just this black sheet I was able to turn off my heater (forced air) and just leave the fan on to circulate this heat throughout the house. I also used a portable fan to move heat out of that room so we could stand working in there on our computers. On sunny days with below freezing temperatures outside , I could shut off our heater from 11:00 am to about 6:00 pm and stay perfectly warm and comfortable inside the house.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m not taking responsibility for your actions and I sure don&#8217;t want anyone interferring in my actions on the basis of freedom destroying nanny state health and safety. If you don&#8217;t like it then don&#8217;t use it!</p>
<p>The main issue is the use of normal garden hose. I am taking the view that I am heating a pool which is filled with fresh water and will be emptied after the season. The water is circulated through the hose only a limited number of times over the season, is raised in temperature only a few degrees during normal use and is not actively drunk. It is, after all, the same water you use to water your vegetables with.</p>
<p>It is important to use matt black paint to maximise the radiant heat capture. There is a noticeable increase in the pool temperature using these panels and turns swimming in it into a pleasurable experience.</p>
<p>If you slow the flow rate down and fill a bucket with it on a sunny day you&#8217;ll see just how much heat is being added. It&#8217;s quite easy to reach temperatures you could bathe or shower in. Each panel is probably the equivalent of a kettle continually heating water all day long &#8211; and that would be very expensive!</p>
<p>I run it at a reasonable flow rate so that the temperature at the return is raised to tepid. This reduces stress on the hose. There is no difference between adding a small amount of very hot water or a large amount of tepid water &#8211; the result on the mass of the pool water is precisely the same.</p>
<p>If you wanted to make this extendable to heating your domestic water the garden hose could be replaced by potable hosing (suitable for transporting drinkable water) or even copper piping.</p>
<p>Anything said here or shown on this video is my opinion and should not be undertaken unless entirely at your own risk.</p>
